Wilde, Oscar, Illustrated by Audrey Beardsley & Andre Derain, Salome (2
volumes); The Limited Editions Club, N.Y., 1938: Unusual double volume
Limited Editions Club issue of Salome'; two volumes:
One volume in the Original French, designed by Rene' ben Sussan an printed
by Dehon et Cie, in a new Peignot type set by hand, on rag Rives paper.
Illustrations are water-colors (9 full page) by Andre' Derain reproduced by
hand on black Ingres paper at Maison Saude'. Black wraps, pink and whit
lettering, original glassine wrapper, mild wrinkling, with various closed
tears and chips to spine and corners. Small foxed spot to title, facing page
and dedication page. #905 of 1500, signed by Derain to Colophon. Rough cut
pages. All else, clean, tightly bound. The English volume was printed in
London, translated into English under Wilde's supervision by his friend Lord
Alfred Douglas. Designed by Ernest Ingham and printed at Fanfare Press, in
Bembo type on rag Pannekoek paper. Illustrations are from the original
drawings made by Aubrey Beardsley for the 'First Edition," including four
drawings which were excluded from that edition. #905 of 1500. Brick colored
cloth boards and spine, elaborated gilt decoration to front, with gilt
lettering, gilt lettering to spine dulled. Rough cut pages, some unopened.
Both in heavy brown slipcase, short split to lower edge, rubbed to all
edges, spine dulled gilt title, mild sunning with few drop damp stains, case
soild. A very nice collection of one of Wilde's most popular works, by two
great illustrators. Includes original card notification of shipping, with
details of books, dated July IX (9) 1938. First Edition Thus. $450.00. Happy

Les Miserables; Introduction By Andre' Maurois; 5 Volumes; Hugo, Victor;
Translation By Lascelles Wraxall, The Limited Editions Club, N.Y., 1938:
 Five illustrated volumes, 705 of 1500, signed by Lynd Ward, artist, to
Colophon. The second of the 10th anniversary series books issued to Limited
Edition Club members. A special introduction written by Andre' Maurois;
illustrated with over 500 drawings in one color. Volumes are sm 4to, with
1475 pages which are divided into five volumes as Victor Hugo originally
divided them: Fantine, Cosette, Marius, Saint-Denis, Jean Valjean.
Translation into English by Lascelles Wraxall (being the one Hugo actually
authorized and approved). Type used is linotype Granjon and it is printed on
especially made thin, tough Worthy paper. Binding is full black linen, with
brown linen labels to spine, stamped in gold. The edition was designed by
Peter Beilenson and printed by him at The Walpole Printing Office, Mount
Vernon, N.Y. All volumes are very clean, tightly bound, red inked upper
edge, few volumes have a pale gutter stain to e.p. Slipcase intact, black,
brown title panel to spine, mild rubbing of edges. Front edges and corners
of slipcase rubbed. Limited Editions Club card notification of set being
shipped for Christmas. Beautiful set. $185.00.
