Taylor, Fitch W. A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, and visits to Various Foreign
Countries, in the United States Frigate Columbia; attended by her consort
the sloop of war John Adams, and commanded by Commodore George C. Read.

New Haven; H. Mansfield: 1848. 9th edition.

The East India Squadron sailed around the world, West to East, stopping at
Rio and thence to Arabia, Bombay, and Columbo before pulling in at Sumatra
and exacting revenge for a Malay attack on an American ship by bombarding
several towns. From there they journeyed to Singapore and Canton, Macao,
Hawaii (the Sandwich Islands), Tahiti, then back to South America and home!
Taylor writes more as a travel writer than an officer making a report,
making this a very readable, interesting narrative.

Hardcover. 2 volumes in one. 5.5"x8", 317 + 331 + 1 + 2 pages; 2 engraved
frontispieces, one a beautifully hand-colored plate of the Emperor of
China; 5 full-page woodcut plates and 10 woodcut illustrations in the text;
original patterned cloth, covers much soiled and somewhat worn, spine quite
soiled, hinges evidently reglued; moderate internal foxing and toning, some
stains. Several signatures pulling, but a tight binding. [02772] $125.00
