1846. 1st edition, hb. Royal 8vo, pp. xxxiii, 584.
The very scarce, first collected edition of the works of the famous
English economist and politician. Included are "Principles of Political
Economy and Taxation" (the Third Edition, as published in London by John
Murray in 1821), "The High Price of Bullion / A Proof of the
Depreciation of Bank Notes. (the Fourth Edition, with an Appendix, as

Bank", "Essay on the Funding System", "Observations on Parliamentary
Reform", "Speech on Voting by Ballot", "Proposals for an Economical

England." A short Sketch of his life and writings is prefixed to the
work; and an Index "is subjoined to facilitate its consultation".
Bound-in at the end of this volume is a 16-page "List of Works in
General Literature published by Mr. Murray, Albemarle Street, London".
Ricardo (1772-1823) was the son of a Dutch jew, who made a fortune on
the London Stock Exchange early in life and, through a reading of "The
Wealth of Nations", became interested in the scientific treatment of
economic questions. His magnum opus, "Principles ofPolitical Economy and
Taxation", was first published in 1817. He sat in Parliament from 1819
to 1823, and is generally regarded as the founder of the classical
school of political economy.
The boards are worn, soiled and bumped, with a tear to the cloth, at the
rear, near the head of the spine. Approximately half of the pages show
staining to margins, with some bleed-through to text. Binding a bit
sprung. Notwithstanding, the hinges and joints are still fairly tight.
Not a pristine copy, but still sound, complete, and otherwise unmarked.
