[CARROLL, Lewis] DODGSON, Charles L. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN
WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE.
New York: Limited Editions Club 1932 & 1935. In original full morocco
bindings with heavy gilt decorations, red for the first title and
blue for the second, in the original slipcases. Each is #1208 of 1500
copies with typography and binding by Frederick Warde who SIGNED the
first volume. Each copy is additionally SIGNED by Alice Hargreaves,
"the original Alice." Only about 500 copies of the first title and
about 1000 of the second were signed by her a few years before her
death. Alice refused to sign other editions of this famous book in
her lifetime, written by Carroll for her when she was young Alice
Liddell, but she was convinced with the help of monetary compensation
at an advanced age to sign these copies. A rare opportunity to
acquire two of the most famous children's books ever published here
signed by the subject of the books. Many have praised these books,
but perhaps novelist Sir Walter Besant's remark on ALICE IN
WONDERLAND is the most insightful: "It admits us into a state of
being which, until it was written, was not only unexplored but
undiscovered." Small adhesive remnant from a bookplate on the verso
of the front endpaper of the first volume and two tiny nicks to the
spine of the second volume. Each has a monthly letter from the
publisher laid in. Beautiful books, rarely found in this condition
with the leather still supple and the slipcases not darkened.
Extraordinarily Fine set and increasingly scarce thus. $6000.00
