Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7787 ) Brooks, William K. (Introduction by Daniel C. Gilman). THE
OYSTER: A POPULAR SUMMARY OF A SCIENTIFIC STUDY.
Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press, 1891. First printing, Original cloth,
Duodecimo, x, 230 pages, Monochrome plates, illustrations. Fine in a plain
brown jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
Dr. Brooks, then Director of the Chesapeake Zoological Laboratory,
sounded an early clarion call about the declining oyster population in the
Chesapeake Bay in the late 19th century. His classic book gives the whole
biology of the oyster, discusses methods for artificial cultivation, makes
observations on the cause of their decline, and suggests a remedy. Includes
data tables and good illustrations. Bound in dark green cloth over boards
with gilt-stamped spine titles and gilt-stamped oyster on upper board,
decorated endpapers. Just faint rubs to corner tips and spine ends. Top
third of upper board shows a small scattering of spots, with a small whitish
abrasion to fore edge. Wrapped in a plain brown jacket with the title and
author pencilled on spine. About as lovely a copy as one is likely to find.
