Greetings All,
For your consideration:
~
(No. 7772 ) Snead, Thomas L[owndes]. (1828-1890). THE FIGHT FOR MISSOURI,
FROM THE ELECTION OF LINCOLN TO THE DEATH OF LYON.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First printing, Full cloth,
Duodecimo, viii, 322 pages + ads, Fold out map. Very Good.
Snead was a Breckenridge Democrat writing for the St. Louis Bulletin
during the presidential campaign of 1860. After Lincoln's victory he
advocated the secession of Missouri, was Acting Adjutant-General of the
State Guard, and eventually became a member of the Confederate Congress.
Snead takes the reader inside the pro-Confederate forces at work, both
political and military, in this crucial border state at the start of the
Civil War. "One of the nearly-indispensable contributions by a participant
in the early struggle for Missouri." -- NEVINS, et al., CWB Vol. I, p. 43.
Bound in slate-blue cloth over boards with gilt-stamped title on spine and
dark blue banner on upper board. Small circular "Brentano Bros." bookseller
label at top of front pastedown. Contemporary gift inscription on
preliminary blank: "To dear Ms. Lee / from her loving / friend / Camelia W.
Ferris [?] / Through the Kindness of / Mr. McElroy / Washington, D.C. /
April 7th 1887." Boards show some light spotting and minor edge wear. Prior
owner has noted a few page numbers on rear free endpaper, and said page
numbers typically have a single tick mark in the margin next to a passage.
