Curtis, George Ticknor. LIFE OF DANIEL WEBSTER. With Extra Illustrations. New 
York: D. Appleton and Company. 1870. Lg. 8vo. 2 vols. bound in 4 (each vol. 
in 2 parts & each part with its own title-page). Index. Several text woodcuts. 
Finely bound in 1/2 red morocco, gilt, raised spine bands, over marbled 
boards. T.e.g. Extra illustrated with 208 engraved portraits & views (13 mounted or 
inlaid to size), each with a blank protective leaf. Laid in at the front of 
the first vol. is a folded, 2-page ALS from the author, George Curtis, dated 
April 2, 1889.     $1,250.00 (trade discount allowed)
The author (1812-1894) was a 19th cent. patent attorney and constitutional 
historian. He defended Scot in the Dred-Scot case. This work was published as 2 
volumes, with the publisher offering a small number of sets expanded to 4 
volumes, “extra illustrated, in a deluxe binding.”
