HALE, Sarah Josepha. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. Philadelphia:
October 1857. Two pages on both sides of one sheet to George Baker.
Mentions her young friend S. Adams Lee and his request to forward
manuscripts enclosed (no longer present): "A Letter from Leight Hunt"
and an unnamed essay as well as notices "of an intended effort to
show respect to the noble conduct of Capt. Herndon." Commander
William Lewis Herndon was the first to explore the Amazon to its head
waters. He went down with his ship in 1857 after transferring 152
passengers and crewmen to a rescue ship. His daughter married future
president Chester A. Arthur. Hale states that "Ladies should feel
deeply interested in this noble sacrifice to the duty of protecting
'women and children' which Captain Herndon and his officers and men
so heroically performed." Hale is perhaps best known as an editor of
Godey's Lady's Book, which is mentioned in this letter, and as author
of "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Letters by Hale with any type of content,
such as this one, are not common. Crease marks from folding. Near
