INNES, Emily. /THE CHERSONESE With the Gilding Off/. Two volume set,
uniformly bound in gilt decorated green cloth, with black-and-white
frontispieces. Richard Bentley and Son, London. 1885. 1st edition, hb.
Small 8vo, pp. 273, 250. With Errata slip tipped-in to volume I. Gilt
design of arm holding sinister engraved dagger on
each of the front boards.

Written as a reply, and subtle rebuke, to Isabella Bird's /The Golden
Chersonese/ (John Murray, 1883) (which Mrs. Innes felt was superficial,
having been written after undertaking a brief two month carefully guided
tour of the country), this is a detailed and charming account of 19th
century Malaysian life and society and its interactions with a
representative of the British colonial system (the author's husband, who
was Tuan, or magistrate in Langat, of the Malaysian States). Recently
reprinted, but now quite rare in its original presentation.

Description of volume I: noticeable spine slant, cloth worn through at
lower right front board, and splitting (for less than an inch) at top
right front board. Three moisture spots to rear board. General scuffing
and light soiling to boards. Endpapers clean and tight. Contents clean
and tight, although page 7 creased. Overall, this volume in good
condition. Description of volume II: slight spine slant. Minor wear and
light bumping to board corners. Rear board a bit spotted. General light
scuffing and soiling. Front board sl. sunned at foredge. Top of front
endpaper has adhered to top of front pastedown (inner front board)
which, upon separating has left three small
abrasions (tears) to top edge of endpapers. Otherwise, endpapers clean
and tight. Contents clean and tight. Overall, this volume in good to
good plus condition.
