PARROT, Dr. Friedrich (translated by W. D. Cooley). /JOURNEY TO ARARAT/.
Bound in original blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt lettering, with
folding map and woodcuts. Longman, Brown, Green; London. 1845. 1st
edition, 8vo, pp. xii, 375. Rear board a bit sunned. Boards bumped,
scuffed & a bit soiled. Top half inch of spine pulled. Now repaired.
Hinges cracking. Contents clean: good plus condition.

First published in German, in 1834, this is an account of the first
ascent of Mt. Ararat, and the exploration of its environs (see Neate
599). Mt. Ararat, at 16,873 feet, was considered unclimable due to the
ice cone surrounding it. It is the mountain referred to in the Bible
(Gen 8:4) upon which Noah's ark is said to have come to rest, and is
part of the Armenian ridge, in the easternmost part of Turkey, adjacent
to the Armenian border. The folding map is creased, and a bit ragged at
the edges but is not foxed and otherwise in very good condition.
Thirty-two page publisher's catalogue at end dated October, 1846.
