Cross, is the Only Way to the Rest and Kingdom of God....., by William Penn;
George Yard, London, 1806:
Title continues: To which are added, the living and dying testimonies of
many persons of fame and learning, both of Ancient and Modern times, in
favour of this treatise. In Two Parts. Followed by two Bible quotes. William
Penn (1644-1718). At the age of 23 Penn wrote "Sandy Foundations Shaken", a
strident attack on Trinitarian doctrines. A book so controversial at the
time Penn was imprisoned in the Tower of London. In 1668 while imprisoned he
put his time to good use and wrote the first version of his great
masterpiece, No Cross, No Crown; his most famous work. Being a discourse on
the power of the cross and self-denial. Penn's dramatic style portrays the
beauty and power of the cross as the only pathway to the crown. It was a
call to Christian discipleship which was expanded in later years and has
spoken to people over the centuries since. Full calf, leather and gilt title
panel to spine, spotted page edges. Spine ends rubbed with over all wear to
leather. Front board held by three binding strings. Old decorative book
plate to pastedown, Inscription to f.e.p., and second book plate "Chawton
House Library", numbered. F.E.P. loose in book. First five pages have few
pale fox marks, text remarkable bright and clear. Rear has listing of, "The
Names of those Persons that are cited in Favour of the Virtue and Temperance
maintained in the foregoing Discourse. Tiny hole in first page of listing,
not on text. 495 +, 8 vo. Protected in archival polyester film. $90.00
