Schlieffen, , Alfred, Graf von. (United States Command and General
Staff School, Fort Leavenworth). CANNAE [TWO VOLUMES]. Fort
Leavenworth, Kan: Command and General Staff School Press, 1931. xv,
306 pp. + portfolio of 101 maps (part fold.) 8vo. (24 cm). Maroon
cloth with gilt titles (hardback); map volume with gilt decorated
snap closures. (Authorized translation).

Count Alfred von Schlieffen (1833-1913), German Army Chief of Staff,
used his analysis of Hannibal's defeat of the Romans at Cannae to
develop his 1905 plans for a great wheeling movement through Belgium
to defeat the French rapidly at the onset of World War I. Though
hampered by lack of mobility in WWI, and Molke's alterations, his
ideal in a somewhat modified form, was used successfully in World War
II against the French in 1940. The translation of the body of this
English edition as well as the maps are from 1913 edition of the
'Collected Writings' while the introduction and some of the footnotes
are from the 1925 edition of 'Cannae'. Volume I contains the text,
Volume II is case with snaps containing 101 maps as well as a list
of the maps. Maps collated. Marginal annotations to the text volume
in pencil by Major Dabsney O. Elliott Army Corps of Engineers (1934
Command and General Staff School).

Boards rubbed, wear at the spine ends on text volume, a few small,
insignificant tears to the cloth on the map volume, binding and case
tight, owner's name to front pastedown, neat marginal pencil
annotations to text, faint marginal crease to three maps otherwise
all are fine, bright, and crisp. A beautiful and complete set.
