(No. 7750 )  Bingham, Hiram. AN EXPLORER IN THE AIR SERVICE (SIGNED).
New Haven: Yale University Press, 1920. First printing, Hardcover, Octavo,
xiv, 260 pages, black & white plates. Good, No dust jacket.
      INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Bingham on front free endpaper. The
inscription is to Col. William H. Wilmer, commander of the Medical Research
Board, and gives the page numbers where Col. Wilmer is mentioned in the
text. Bingham, an experienced scientific explorer, trained at the aviation
school in Miami, Florida and was breveted a pilot in May, 1917. By 1918 he
was Chief of the Air Service and commanded the 3rd Aviation Instruction
Centre, A. E. F., at Issoudun, France. An excellent account of the training
of pilots and the making of policy in the American Air Service during World
War I. Many interesting photographs, diagrams of aerial maneuvers, etc.
NOFFSINGER #223. Bound in green paper over boards with black cloth spine,
gilt-stamped spine lettering, top edge gilt. Binding remains tight, no hinge
cracks. There are minor rubs to extremities, shallow fraying to cloth at
spine ends, and light browning to top edges of both boards. Paper clip
impressions at top margin of a few leaves where Col. Wilmer is mentioned,
and a neat arrow is pencilled in the margin at the beginning of this
passage. Some apparent dampstaining to lower board which has caused moderate
fading to cloth along near spine and some minor spotting to bottom 2 inches
of board. This is confined to the exterior of the book. Inside is very clean
and bright with no foxing.    $125.00

      Subtitle continues: "...with Special Reference to Simplified
Explanations of the Theory of Flight, Aerodynamics and Basic Principles
Underlying the Action of Balloons and Airplanes of All Types. A
Non-Technical Manual for All Students of Aircraft. This Book Includes
Instructions for Lining Up and Inspecting Typical Airplanes Before Flight
and Also Gives Easily Understood Rules for Flying." A wealth of information
on early planes, wing designs, propellers, with numerous drawings to scale,
some fold-outs. One particularly interesting section gives detailed
directions (with illustrations) on uncrating, assembling and aligning a
Curtiss JN4 biplane. See NOFFSINGER #2111. Bound in grey cloth over boards
with black spine title and black decoration, title, and border rule to upper
board. Minor extremity rubs. Prior owner has initialed the upper board under
the illustration in 1/2" high letters. Prior owner name and date penned on
front free endpaper, bookplate on front pastedown. There is a 1928 Air Mail
route map tipped onto front free endpaper. A few scattered neat pencil
underlines in text. Binding sound, hinges not cracked.    $50.00
