GERARD,  John.  [HERBAL]  THE  HERBALL  OR  GENERALL  HISTORIE  OF
PLANTES.  London:  Islip, Norton & Walkers 1633. Second  Edition.  STC
11751;  Hunt 223; Nissen 698. The Second Edition of this famous herbal
but  the  First  Edition  revised  and  enlarged  by  T.  Johnson  who
corrected  many  of Gerard's errors and who improved the  accuracy  of
the  illustrations  by using Plantin's woodcuts. Folio (9" x  13-1/2")
bound  in full 19th century calf recently rebacked with original spine
and  spine  label.  Illustrated  with an engraved  title  page  with a
border  of  vignettes,  decorative   and  historiated  headpieces  and
initials,  and  2766  botanical woodcuts in the text  describing  over
2800  plants.  Original  blank  endpapers  lacking.  Four  consecutive
signatures  misbound.  Two  short  tape repairs on the  verso  of  the
engraved  title  page that leave a slight shadow on the recto.  Modern
bookplate  on the front pastedown. Nice, clean copy of this  important
book.                                                         $6500.00
