New York: Harper & Brothers, 1887. First printing, Full cloth, Duodecimo,
xviii, 308 pages + 4 pp. Ads, black & white engraved cuts, plates. Very
good.
      A vivid personal account of the life of a 19th century American
merchant sailor. Captain Samuels describes a wide variety of lively
experiences, including service as a boy on a Philadelphia collier,
confrontations with pirates, command of the clipper-packet Dreadnought,
rescuing a Christian woman from a Turkish harem, mutinies, hurricanes, and
much more. Many interesting illustrations, including one showing a whaler
peeling blubber from a whale while sharks attack the carcass. Frontispiece
portrait of the author. Ref: ALBION p. 77 (starred item). Bound in dark blue
cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine title and ornament, gilt and
silver-stamped upper board illustration and title, brown endpapers. Only
minor extremity rubs. Mild dampstaining to margins. Hinges remain strong.
