Willett, Edward, Letters Addressed to Mrs. Bellamy, Occassioned by Her Apology. J. Rozea, London circa 1875, Fair, Disbound, 8vo, 75pp.

No binding of any sort, just 75 loose pages, some front and rear pages with tiny chips and tears to edges. George Anne Bellamy was an accomplished actress of the stage. She led a riotous and extravagant life, and, her embarrassing situations were the cause of much public scandal. She married bigamously, had several illegitimate children, and when her beauty faded, she turned to gambling, racking up a large debt (and the need for an apology). Most of her actions were a reflection of the way women were treated in 18th century England. In 1873 George Anne Bellamy penned "An Apology for the Life of George Anne Bellamy, Late of Covent-Garden Theatre, Written By Herself", (but probably ghost-written, because of the questionable reliability of the events of her life) This item for sale, is in response to her apology, and to quote one writer, "then give your book its true title; and instead of An Apology, call it, An Attempt to justify the Life, and vindicate the Misconduct of G.A. Bellamy." So sad! A very scarce item, in any condition. Bellamy, George Anne, 1727-1788. $550.00
