LIQUIDATION OF THE ENTIRE STOCK OF THE NEW YORK
STORE OF YANAMAKA & Co., ORIENTAL ART.
New York; Parke-Bernet Galleries:
May 24-27th, June 14-16th, June 28-30th, 1944.
Sales 572, 579, 581.
Yamanaka & Co. was founded in Yokohama in the 18th century, and since the
turn of the 20th Century they had sold the finest antique Japanese and
Oriental arts at their New York store. They also operated stores in
Chicago, Boston and Bar Harbor, and published beautiful catalogs.
That all changed with Pearl Harbor, and on December 8th, 1941, the stores
were seized by the United States government. The Bar Harbor and Boston
stores were closed immediately, but the Chicago and New York branches
continued to operate under the Alien Property Custodian, until it was
decided to accelerate the process of liquidation by selling the stock at
auction.
These three Parke-Bernet sales cover the bulk of the stock. The first
catalog features the best stock and has fairly detailed descriptions;
catalogs Two and Three feature brief, one and two-line descriptions, often
listing lots of related items. Obviously the authorities were in a hurry to
simply get rid of the material. The fourth volume is Sale 581A, a short
catalog of Chinese, Korean & Japanese garden sculptures.
Softcover. 4 vols. 7"x10" [and] 6.5"x9.5"; 190 pages, 939 lots; 119 pages,
1172 lots; 139 pages, 1253 lots; 10 pages, 55 lots; b/w illustrations;
several institutional stamps, else nice copies. [06965] $150.00
