cm. or the reverse .All on sheets noting the name of the flier and the
observer, the height, and a number of other bits of technical information.
The sheets are all numbered in red except for the first 2. The numbering
begins with 3 and runs to 104. Most of these sheets have two aerial
photographs of the size noted, but some consist entirely of a much larger
photograph which is folded over so as to fit into a plastic envelope 20 cm.
wide by 35 cm tall. These are called "Langenbilder", and the first one is
named : Langenbild No.44 II zusamengest. & verf. U. Gruppenbildstelle 198,
Eigener & feindl. Stellungen i. Ailly - & Apremont Wald. Aufgenomen von
flieger-Abt. 37 am 16.8.18. This is not numbered in series. The photos all
are clearly described in white on black on a margin, and some of the larger
ones also have red lines added to indicate military features. At the rear
of the album there are three very large originals of the sort which are
called "Langenbilder" in the folded example. But these are made up of
segments from many different originals ready to be photographed and made
into langenbilder. The album thus seems to be a nearly complete record of a
German aeronautic unit: Flieger Abteilung 37, and their work at one field
of combat. This is a most unusual survival, as well as an important
monument to early aerial surveying. All photographs are clear, unfaded and
unbrowned. Those folded have cracks in the folds [not the Langen format
shot nor the large masters for these in the rear]. Several of the larger
photographs were originally in a ring binder and have holes made by the
rings. None the less a spectacular album. USD 4250.00
