1.	BATTY, ELIZABETH FRANCES : ITALIAN SCENERY. FROM DRAWINGS MADE IN 1817.
Rodwell & Martin, 1820. Royal 8vo.[27 cm.], AEG, [iv] + 197 Pp. + [3, list
of plates]; engraved title, 60 engraved views and 1 engraved vignette of
Vesuvius; First edition. A very well chosen series of views showing scenery
from the Alps in the north to Naples in the south by the sister of Robert
Batty. In some cases the views were made in then unimproved locations which
now are very close to constructed views of the scene in question. The
plates were engraved after Batty's originals primarily by Charles Heath,
but also by Samuel Mitan, George Corbould, Edward Finden, Robert Wallis and
others. According to the dedication, the descriptive texts that accompany
each view "were written by a friend of the Publisher's," but elsewhere the
author is described as the artist's father, Doctor Batty, to whom the book
is dedicated. Original full calf, ruled gilt lines, a lyre and paintbrush
in gilt in the center of each board, backstrip divided into 6 boxes, four
of which largely filled with geometric classicising pattern, the remaining
two with original black title and author labels. Corners worn, front hinge
professionally repaired, TP and dedication leaf barely foxed, with a very
rare fox mark within. The plates and text are essentially pure white and
very clean. Armorial bookplate of Robert Fowler, Signature on front blank
of Lucy Waterhouse, dated 1823. A Very Good copy. $1600.00

2.	BEAVER, PHILIP : AFRICAN MEMORANDA : RELATIVE TO AN ATTEMPT TO ESTABLISH
A BRITISH SETTLEMENT ON THE ISLAND OF BULAMA, on the western coast of
Africa, in the year 1792 : with a brief notice of the neighbouring tribes,
soil, productions, &c. and some observations of the facility of colonising
that part of Africa, with a view to cultivation, and the introduction of
letters and religion to its inhabitants, but more particularly as the means
of gradually abolishing African slavery / by Captain Philip
Beaver... London : Printed for C. and R. Baldwin, 1805. [5], xv, 500 p.,
[2] Pp. of plates, plans ; and a very large folded map. 28 cm[4to]. 2
full-page engraved plans, each with a page of descriptive text. "In the
end of 1791 Beaver associated himself with a scheme for colonising the
island of Bulama on the coast of Africa, near Sierra Leone, and left
England for that place on 14 April 1792. The whole affair seems from the
beginning to have been conducted without forethought or knowledge. The
would-be settlers were, for the most part, idle and dissipated. Beaver
found himself at sea in command of a vessel of 260 tons, with 65 men, 24
women, and 31 children, mostly sea-sick, and all equally useless. When they
landed, anything like discipline was unattainable. The party, assembled on
shore, proved ignorant alike of law, industry, or order. The directors lost
heart and took an early opportunity of returning to England. The command
devolved on Beaver, and during a period of eighteen months he endeavoured,
by unceasing toil, to keep a little order and to promote a little industry;
but the men were quite unfitted for the work and manner of life, and the
greater number of them died." (DNB, 2, pp. 70-1). Allibone I, P. 151: "An
interesting, well written work, and of which, every page bears internal
evidence of the strictest veracity." Cox I, 398, Gay 3196; Brunet 28440,
Goldsmiths-Kress Lib.of Econ. Lit. 19071. The Kress copy lacks map and
plans. Modern Mbld. Bds. Calf B'strip, gilt title, raised bands, new EPs.
Map Professionally repaired, no loss, VG. $1250.00

4.	CARNEGIE, ANDREW : ROUND THE WORLD; by Andrew Carnegie. New York,
[Privately Printed] New York, 1879, 223 Pp. 8vo, Inscribed : Bryce Bay Jr.
Compliments of the Author. The first, privately printed, edition of this
work. The trip took place in 1878. It was printed privately again in 1880
and in 1884 it was commercially produced. There were many editions through
1933. By 1884 it had grown to 336 pages. In none of the copies noted is
there an inscription mentioned. Apparently he rarely inscribed this
book. He traveled across the U.S. from the east coast, thence to Japan
where this book truly begins, China, Singapore, then through to India, the
Near East, Italy, a few words on France. Most time being spent on the Far
and Near East. RLIn, 4 Locs [Bancroft, Cal.State Lib., Brown, Penn
State]. Pub. cloth, black and gold stamped, corners bumped, spine above
the book block at top lacking, OW Good. $ 575.00

5.	CELSIUS, OLOF AND WAHLSTEDT, JACOB J. : ITER IN AMERICAM, annuente
ampliss. sen. philos. Upsaliensi, submoderamine ... Olavi Celsii ... pro
laurea philosophica publico examini subjicit Jacobus J. Wahlstedt, Westm.
In Auditorio Gustaviano majori, die xxv. maji, anno MDCCXXV: Upsaliæ,

worked under the supervision of Celsius. OCLC, 5 Locs [NYP, LNN, HLS, MHS,
PSV]; Howes W 15, Sabin 106960, noting also the Hispanic Society copy.
Sabin quotes the Brinley catalog which said "
on the evidences of visits
of the Norsemen to America." Once bound in marbled wraps, now gone and it
is as it was, only without them. It is in near Fine condition with
contemporary ink emendations to sources quoted and corrections to the text.
These must have been made by the first owner "Carl J. Fries", who has
signed his name at the bottom of the title page. $1075.00

6.	CUBBIN, THOMAS : THE WRECK OF THE SERICA : A Personal Narrative of Peril
and Adventure. By her Captain, Thomas Cubbin. London, Simpkin, Marchall &
Co., Liverpool, Edward Howell, Church Street, Douglas, Mylrea & Allen,
1870. 12mo, iv, 212Pp. OCLC, Finding the 1950 limited reprint only, in 30
locations! Not in COPAC. It and the BL have only the 1950 reprint. There
must be one other copy, since the reprint was made. But, it seems, only
one! Not in Cox or Work. A classic of a wreck on the shores of Madagascar,
with a good deal about Madagascar native peoples, their culture, and
interaction with the survivors. Including an eyewitness account of a slave
sale and other observations. It is unusual in that Cubbin, the captain was
accompanied by his wife and children. The experience was disastrous for
her health. It is a very rare book of interest as a tale of the sea and as
an account of Madagascar in the nineteenth century. In original cloth,
gilt and black stamped Dec. covers, a Very Good copy, and apparently only
the second known! $1250.00

7.	FREDERICK [NEUHOFF, FREDERIC DE'] : THE DESCRIPTION OF CORSICA, with an
Account of its Union to the Crown of Great Britain : Including the life of
General Paoli, and the memorial presented to the National assembly of
France, upon the forests in that island. With a plan highly beneficial to
both states, illustrated with a map of Corsica ... / By Frederick, son of
the late Theodore, King of Corsica. London : Printed for G.G. and J.
Robinson ..., 1795.[iii]-viii, 211, [1] p., [1] folded leaf : ill., map ;
22 cm. (8vo). The original appeared under the title "Memoires pour sevir a
l'histoire de la Corse [DNB]." One of the earliest complete accounts of the
island, historically, geographically and politically. It is preceded by
perhaps three works in English including Frederick's 1768 work of 170 Pp.
It deals not only with the political and military history of the island,
but also with its resources and economic circumstances and potential,
economically for the future. Cox I, 165, Lowndes P. 748. The Corsica
described, is that on which Napoleon lived before he chose the army as a
career. Its circumstances shed life on his character since it deals with
the very period while he was growing up on the island. RlIN finds 3
copies, OCLC, 15 Locs. But paper copies are lacking in many major research
libraries. Ownership signature of Wm. M. Bushell, 1828, on TP. Original
calf, Mro. label, gilt, minor hinge repairs, a Very Good copy. $675.00

8.	[FULBERT]: DIX ANS DANS L'INDE. Saigon: Imprimerie Rey & Curiol
(1887). [ii] + 118 pp. 9 inches tall, in pale green wraps. The author
spent his time in Pondicherry usefully. He became acquainted with Indian
religion and literature, customs and its economy. He begins with a
historical sketch of Pondicherry under the French. Later with Hindu
religion and literature as well as the caste system. He describes life in
Pondicherry, for example, spending a chapter on the Bazaar and its
importance in local life. He ends with his consideration of "The Men and
Women of the East." Because of our author's serious consideration
of Indian theology and the attributes and character of its gods and
heros, and of the caste system, his consideration of individual men and
women is more important and worth reading, both for its biases and its
clarity. No copy found in OCLC, COPAC,BL, Cc de F. BN, KVK. A very rare
account of the last years of French administered Pondicherry. Near Fine,
with the backstrip chipped. $750.00

9.	INNES, EMILY : THE CHERSONESE WITH THE GILDING OFF. London, Bentley,
1885. 2 Vols., plates and other illustrations. This is a riposte to Isablla
Bird's "The Golden Chersonese and the way thither," of 1883, which just
loved the Malays and their home. Innes was the wife of "The Magistrate and
collector for the Malay native states." They lived at Langsat and she tried
to maintain a British Victorian establishment using Malays as servants and
lviing in the tropics with her husband and children. She hated it all.
Could not stand and did not try to understand how Malays lived, went to
market, bought and sold, treated each other and other people. She thought
it was all just so awful and is full of the specifics of the whole "mess".
It is the kind of book which unwittingly shows the difference between Malay
manners, customs and prejuduces and those of the British, which are front
and center, of course. It is the book you love to hate if you are a Malay
or happen to know them "at home" and love them. There are 16 copies noted
in OCLC, but it is rare on the market. In original green cloth, gilt, near
Fine copies. $875.00

10.	MARTIN, BARNARDIN : VOYAGES FAITS EN DIVERS TEMPS EN ESPAGNE, EN
PORTUGAL, EN ALLEMAGNE, WN FRANCE, et ailleurs: Amsterdam : George
Gallet,1699. [6], 295 p., [13] leaves of plates[Etchings] : ill. ; 16 cm.
Signatures: 4 A-M12 N4, Title page printed in red and black. A very well
illustrated book in the mannerist style. Two plates contrasting bull fights
in Spain and Portugal are included. Other significant plates include one
of a procession through the streets in Spain, and others of landed estates.
Palau y Dulcet (2nd ed.), 153564; OCLC: 34354194 no locations of this First
Edition, but 5 of the second of 1700, 2 in the US [HHG, CUS] and 3 at [QE2,
ERL, EQO]in Europe and Canada. KVK, unnoted except for the BL, but there
is a second copy at the BN. Original full calf, complex Dec. gilt, spine, 5
raised bands, ruled and crible` lines, fleurettes in each box except for
the red Mro. title label, gilt. A near fine copy. $1375.00
