Greetings All,

For your consideration:
~
(No. 7161 ) Greeley, Horace (1811-1872). THE AMERICAN CONFLICT: A HISTORY
OF THE GREAT REBELLION IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1860-'65...INTENDED
TO EXHIBIT ESPECIALLY ITS MORAL AND POLITICAL PHASES
RESPECTING HUMAN
SLAVERY, FROM 1776 TO THE CLOSE OF THE WAR FOR THE UNION (IN 2 VOLS.).
Hartford: O. D. Case & Company, 1881. Full cloth, Octavos, 648 + 782 pages,
Steel engravings, maps, portraits. Good to very good.
Greeley was the founding editor of the New York Tribune, and from this
position exerted significant influence on national public opinion. His
history of the Civil War, written during the war and originally published in
1864-66, wears the emotions and passions of the time on its sleeve. Greeley
was a fine writer and he is generally fair to all parties, though he does
not shy away from heaping extra doses of scorn or praise upon figures deemed
worthy of such special attention. He includes substantial material on
emancipation and the crushing of the rebellion in the final three years of
the war, as well as several interesting predictions regarding the slavery
issue after the war. Greeley's work certainly contains errors and biases,
but it remains an important contemporary source. See EICHER #741; CWB vol.
II, p. 15; DORNBUSCH vol. III, #196. Two volumes in original blind embossed
cloth over boards with dark brown endpapers, gilt stamped spine titles.
Illustrated with numerous cuts, maps, and 17 tissue-guarded engraved plates.
Pages are printed in double columns, volumes are individually indexed.
Spines are faded but gilt remains reasonably strong. Extremities are rubbed
and have a few frays. Bookplate from the Library of the Williston Seminary
is pasted in on front pastedown of both volumes, along with an occasional
unobtrusive stamp throughout. Scattered mild foxing and an occasional old
water tide mark to page edges. Hinges are tight in volume I, but starting in
volume II. $100.00
