[EMBLEM BOOK] QUARLES, Francis. EMBLEMS DIVINE AND MORAL: TOGETHER
WITH  HIEROGLYPHICS  OF  THE  LIFE  OF MAN.  London:  H.  Trapp  1777.
Duodecimo  (4-1/4" x 6-3/4") bound in full polished green morocco with
a  gilt-decorated spine and a morocco spine label, gilt dentelles, all
edges  gilt; marbled endpapers. [8], 9-289, [1] pages with an engraved
frontispiece  and  94 full-page wood engraved emblems, printed on  one
side  only, interspersed throughout and not counted in the pagination.
A  well-illustrated  book  first published in the  17th  century.  The
accompanying  text  consists  mostly of Bible quotations.  As  Quarles
states  in  his  Note  to  the Reader: "An  emblem  is  but  a  silent
parable."  Offsetting  to  text  from engravings  but  contents  quite
fresh.  Spine  chipped  at label with rubbing and slight  cracking  to
joints but with hinges secure. Near Fine                       $500.00
