JOYCE, James. */ULYSSES/*. Complete two volume set, bound in original
reddish-brown cloth. Published by Shakespeare and Company, Paris, in
January, 1924. Larger 8vo, pp. 736. Colophon states: "Printed for Sylvia
Beach by Maurice Darantiere at Dijon, France". With four pages of
corrections at end of volume II.
First published by Sylvia Beach (Shakespeare and Company, Paris) in
February, 1922, in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies. The
second and third printings, by the Egoist Press, London, were the
subject of numerous confiscations by the authorities. Notwithstanding,
many copies of were smuggled into America by tourists, and /Ulysses/
achieved an early reputation as a modern classic. When, in 1933, Bennett
Cerf challenged the U.S. Post Office's censorship stranglehold over
literature, he arranged publication terms with Joyce, and a Random House
representative dutifully asked a customs official to confiscate his copy
of /Ulysses/ so that a court case could be initiated. The result was the
epic decision of U. S. District Court Judge John M. Woolsey, lifting the
ban, and setting new standards for defining pornography (see /Dictionary
of Irish Literature, /p. 333).
This is the fourth printing of the first edition, bound in the original
undistinguished cloth, with gilt spine lettering. The boards are now
scuffed, bumped, and worn at the corners, with a tear to the cloth of
vol. I at the
spine. The inner half of the top edge of vol. II is stained. The hinges
and joints are still tight, but the binding of each volume is somewhat
shaken. As collectors know, the paper used in this printing is subject
to "browning" and brittleness. The paper in this copy is no exception,
and all pages show age-toning at the margins, with occasional chipping
to the edges due to brittleness. There is a former owner's bookplate on
the front pastedown ("Irving Jay Brown") of each volume. Overall, a good
set of what has been described as the greatest novel in the English
language.
