TWAIN, Mark [CLEMENS, Samuel]. [COMPLETE WORKS] THE WRITINGS OF
MARK TWAIN. New York: Harper 1929. Copy #105 of 1024 of the
Stormfield Edition in 37 volumes, though this set lacks two volumes:
26, which contains shorter pieces, and 37, which is the second half
of Twain's autobiography. Beautifully bound in 3/4 deep blue morocco
with gilt rules, five raised bands, gilt-lettered and decorated
spines, and top edge gilt. Bound into the first volume is an
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Samuel Clemens dated 17 July 1909 on his
Stormfield, Redding, Connecticut stationery addressed to the Officers
of the Produce Exchange Safe Deposit and asking that his secretary,
Albert Bigelow Paine, be allowed to remove the contents of his safe
deposit box to another box on 42nd Street "handy to my RR station."
SIGNED "S. L. Clemens." Overall condition is Near Fine. Nineteen of
the thirty-five volumes have been professionally rebacked with the
original spines laid on, though several of them are now dull. Still
the set has an attractive uniform shelf appearance and contains all
of the major works by Clemens as well as a number of the minor
pieces. Overall a Near Fine set with a fine letter. $9500.00
