EINSTEIN, Albert. /*RELATIVITY The Special & General Theory / A Popular
Exposition. */ Bound in publisher's red cloth with black spine
lettering. Published by Methuen & Co., London. 1920. 12mo, pp. xiii,
138. The first English language edition, in an authorised translation by
Robert W. Lawson; with five diagrams, a frontispiece of the author, and
eight pages of ads at end.
Einstein (1879-1955) was born into a Jewish family at Ulm, Germany. He
moved with them to Munich, where he eventually studied physics and
mathematics, before graduating from the Zurich Polytechnic in 1900. He
became a Swiss citizen in 1905, after being appointed an examiner at the
Swiss Patent Office in 1902. One hundred years ago, as an obscure 26
year-old patent clerk lost in the intricacies of the Swiss government
bureaucracy, Einstein first promulgated his famous equation. Sixteen
years later, he had published both his special, and general, theories of
relativity, and won the Noble Prize in Physics.
This, the volume containing his general theory, was first published in
German in 1916: /this is the first English language translation/, taken
from the third (1918) German edition. With a Preface, Note by Einstein,
a Translator's Note, three Appendices, Bibliography, and Index at end;
followed by eight pages of publisher's advertisements.
Slight spine slant. Spine a bit sunned. Boards bumped at corners and top
edge. Light soiling to boards, and a trace of rubbing to board edges.
Small, neat, bookplate of famed science writer J. G. Crowther
(1889-1983) affixed to front pastedown, with off-setting to front free
endpaper. Slight (one inch) tear to top of front hinge, otherwise joints
and hinges tight. Contents clean. Good condition.
Price: $500.00.
