THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.  Tokei[Sic!], 1872 Printed by Matsmoto, Sold by all 
the booksellers. 4, 84 [1] Pp., 17 x 12 cm,  Unlocated on OCLC, the BL has 
a copy of the complete three volumes, and is the only copy noted. Covers 
worn and rubbed, Japanese characters written on back wrap, a little ink on 
one page, OW VG. $350.00

2.	SHIMADA, Y. [Yutaka]: AN ENGLISH-JAPANESE LEXICON: EXPLANATORY, 
PRONOUNCING AND ETYMOLOGICAL containing all English words in present use. 
With an appendix, translated by Y. Shimada, revised by S. Sugiura, J. 
Inoue, and Ai Manase. Illustrated With Avove[!] 700 Cuts. / New Edition 
/    M.Okura, Tokyo. / 20th Year of Meiji (1887) Title-page also in 
Japanese. 4, xxv [1], 932, 54, [12]. 15.5  by 10.5 by 6.5 cm. The basis of 
this dictionary is Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. There is no edition 
this early in any American library. The National Diet Library in Japan, 
which is the repository for Meiji publications has only an 1888 edition, 
which is called "2nd Edition" which it cannot be, since this 1887 edition 
is a "New Edition". The first copyright is stated to have been made, on the 
verso of TP,  in the 11th year of Meiji [1878]  There is no copy of this 
title at all at KVK, COPAC or BL.[a second copy of that edition of 1888, is 
also located in JAPAN, Nothing Earlier. ] Original full calf, blind stamped 
and gilt with the title in both languages, and with Okura's name and city. 
Binding worn at all edges, especially at head and foot of spine, 2 small 
losses at one hinge, but still serviceable and strong. OW a VG copy. $675.00

3.	SOSEKI, NATSUME :~ I AM A CAT Translated by K. Ando, revised by K. 
Natsume. ~Tokyo, H. Shoten, 1906 19 cm. With original woodcuts by Soseki of 
himself as a cat and of other cats. First Edition in English. This first 
volume was followed by a second in 1909 and an elusive third volume. Each 
was published separately. This is his first publication in English. Soseki 
is usually considered the first modern Japanese novelist.  Overtones of 
melancholy and loss [of traditional Japanese culture] run throughout all of 
his work. He, however, was very well read in European literature in both 
French and English and spent his life as Prof. of English at Tokyo U.~

4.	SOUTH MANCHURIA RAILWAY[CORP. AUTHOR]: REPORT ON PROGRESS IN MANCHURIA 
1907-1928.  S.Manch. RR. 1929. Dairen. Folio, 29 cm., [10], very large 
folding map, colored chart, 238 Pp., + UP index, 35 FP collotypes after 
photographs. All very well printed with a very large folding plan of Darien 
at the rear. Flexible cloth covered boards, titled in gilt. A detailed 
analysis of the development and economy of Manchuria under Japanese 
rule.With presentation card from the Railway inserted at front Fr. EP. OCLC 
finds one copy in Japan[Waseda] and one in Germany [Niedersachsische St. u. 
Univ], none in the USA.  A Very Good copy. $450.00

5.	STRANGE, EDWARD F. CHINESE LACQUER.  London: Ernest Benn, 1926. 4to. 54 
plates, some colored. 72 pp. text. Each plate is accompanied by guard sheet 
with descriptive letterpress. "600 copies only of this book have been 
printed, of which 100 copies constitute an edition de luxe, numbered 1-100. 
Discusses the history, techniques and decorative motifs of lacquer, with 
detailed descriptions of the plates, which includes pieces of carved 
lacquer (Ming, K'ang Hsi and Ch'ien Lung), flat lacquer (Ming and K'ang 
Hsi), lacquer inlaid with shell, incised, Foo-chow and Coromandel lacquer. 
Strange is described on the title page as "Late keeper of wood work, 
Victoria and Albert Museum", but he was one of the great authorities on the 
Japanese wood block print of his generation. He was also an authority on 
Japanese lacquer.  Although a number of these copies are in major 
institutions, it is rare today. No 20 of those 100 copies of the 
"edition  de Luxe."  Full Mro., Pict. stamped in gilt. Minor wear to 
corners, very small repair to crown of spine, else very good. $475.00

6.	STRONACH, JOHN Translator:   (THE PSALMS  SHIPIAN) SI-PHIAN.  [Amoy,], 
Printed under the supervision of J. Howard Van Doren(Missionary of the 
American Reformed Church)1873. Physical 183.Pp. ; 8o. Note: Printed in 
roman characters on Asian style doubled sheets, Chinese style binding, 
flexible blue cloth. No provenance information, but the first owner added 
information about the press and publisher in ink to the title page which 
was not present either at the BL or in Darlow and Moule. Unlocated in OCLC, 
but there are copies at the BL and in Darlow and Moule Vol. II Part I, 
2766. A Fine copy. $885.00

8.	UNDERWOOD, L.H. : FIFTEEN YEARS AMONG THE TOP-KNOTS OR LIFE IN KOREA. 
Boston, New York, Chicago, [1908] , American Tract Society. Frontispiece, 
271 Pp., 41 b.w. photos. The author arrived in Korea in 1888, here gives an 
account of her experiences as a missionary and her travels and life among 
Koreans. She began her work at Chemulpo, and also worked with Palace women. 
Chapters on: "baby riots," visits with the Queen, activities in Kangai, 
Rice Christians, dancing girls &c.She also comments on her work as a 
medical missionary, on such historical events as war with Japan, 
the  murder of Kim Oh Kiun, the first Church built by Koreans, themselves, 
the danger of Russia to Korea, and particularly on the needs of Korean 
women.OCLC, 28 Locs.  Almost Fine [VG+] in green cloth, red, black and 
white decorative stamping. $275.00

9.	WAWN, J. TWIZELL : JAPANESE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT with an account of the 
administration of the city of Kobe / J Twizell Wawn.  Kobe, 1899, 
[s.n.],  (Office of the "Kobe Chronicle").  22 Pp. ; 24 cm. Kobe : Original 
wraps, hinge weak, small chips. COPAC unnoted, OCLC microform, only, no 
paper copies located. Internally VG, over all, Good. $200.00.

10.	WOOD, WILLIAM MAXWELL : FANKWEI; OR, THE SAN JACINTO IN THE SEAS OF 
INDIA, CHINA, AND JAPAN. By William Maxwell Wood.  New York, Harper, 1859. 
viii p., 1 ., [11]-545 p. 19 cm. Wood traveled as the ship's surgeon, and 
from that perspective describes the ship and its various ports of call in 
Asia. He is a fine observer, and discusses in detail architecture, 
decorative design, clothes, customs and behavior. Everything interests him 
and is described in precise and clear detail. It is one of the best written 
mid century accounts of East Asia. RLIn/OCLC not uncommon in older 
libraries. Now scarce and available in recent facsimile. With a 
presentation inscription from the author on the dedication page. Very Good 
copy in original cloth. $425.00
