TOYO OZEKI: GENPEI SEISUIKI [Yoshitsune's adventures] complete in one
volume. MEIJI 22 (1889). Printed from etchings on copper; 20 actual pages
of pictures and text[by 24 cm.], but two of these are fold out pages with
illustrations on both sides making wonderful openings. The Japanese hero
Yoshitsune and his legend were a frequent source of both Kabuki and Ukiyo'e
prints. Kuniyoshi was particularly taken with him and did numerous major
works related to his legend. However, the medium of etching on copper,
which was popular in Japan for only about ten years, is a very rare one as
is this book. Not only are there no copies noted in the West, at BL, OCLC,
Harvard Yenching, Ryerson, but there is no copy in the Japanese major
repository for Meiji books, the Japanese Diet Library. The title page has a
little vague pink stain the same shade as the outer covers. These have been
badly abraded, and repaired, the title slip is lacking. However the
contents are in excellent condition, very well printed on strong paper.
There is some tearing in one of the folds of a folded plate, but one which
has discrete images on each fold and the tears affect nothing pictorially
or in the text, otherwise a lovely copy of a great rarity which is also an
original treatment of one of the great Japanese warrior legends. $875.00
