al. 1773. Fourth Edition. ...AND ILLUSTRATED IN THEIR DIFFERENT
SIGNIFICATIONS BY EXAMPLES FROM THE BEST WRITERS. TO WHICH ARE
PREFIXED, A HISTORY OF THE LANGUAGE, AND AN ENGLISH GRAMMAR. Two tall
folio (10-1/4" x 16-1/2") volumes in contemporary dark calf gilt
recently rebacked in slightly lighter calf with six raised bands,
elaborate gilt decoration, and red and brown morocco spine labels;
original marbled endpapers retained. This Fourth Edition is the most
important after the first, containing Johnson's extensive final
revisions and additions, and is considered the preferred edition
among scholars. In the Advertisement leaf bound in this edition,
Johnson states: "Many faults I have corrected, some superfluities I
have taken away, and some deficiencies I have supplied. I have
methodised some parts that were disordered and illuminated some that
