Sulphur in Andaman Islands. In 1872 Burton received an offer from a British
mining speculator to explore the sulfur mines in Iceland; he was promised
expenses and BP 2000 if large deposits should be found. He visited
Reykjavic, sailed to Hofsos on the north coast via Stykkisholmar,
Isafjordur, and Bordeyri; travelled to the Hekla volcano and the geyser at
Reykir; and visited the Myvatn sulphur mines near Reykjahlid via Djupivogr.
Burton found only sulfur which was not easily extracted, but he did explore
the island at his leisure. His book became one of the most important books
of travel and exploration on the area. It covers Icelandic, history,
geography, geology, population statistics, taxation problems, fishing,
industry, economics, and politics. Burton did not find the place
intrinsicially romantic and found the women cold, but he did react to the
poverty and hardship of the people with plans for reorganizing sulphur
mining and fishing and for encouraging emigration to combat overcrowding.
