For your Consideration: For your consideration: Punch or The London
Charivari, Volume XXI,
1851-1853, Lemon, Mark Editor, Fleet Street, London, circa early 1904 -The
first edition of Punch was published on July 17, 1841. Its founders, wood
engraver Ebenezer Landells & writer Henry Mayhew, got the idea for the
magazine from a satirical French daily, Charivari. The first issue was
subtitled, "The London Charivari". Full of the British Satire particularly
political; House of Lords, House of Commons, Parliament were favorite
targets. But any movement, headline, faith or event was fair game.
Reproductions of wood engravings on each page, many full page illustrations.
This is actually a compilation of annual or Almanacs that the first edition
Mark Lemon started issuing, which saved the publication from bankruptcy.
Very solidly bound in red cloth, blind stamp illustration with Punch at
easel, title of Punch & the London Charivari in illustration, spine ornate
gilt design of Punch with title & date. Upper & lower spine ends bumped, two
closed repaired tears to upper spine end, mild darkening of cloth. Corners
rubbed. Front inside hinges reinforced, binding solid. Small fox spots to
e.p. Small square label with number to pastedown. Text & illustrations clean
& clear, binding tight. A substantial handsome volume. Over 600 pus index,
4to + London, 1899 blind stamped to front board. $75.00
