ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS) to her son James
about his ulcers. Hyde Park: 13 July 1938. A brief but revealing
personal letter on Val-Kill Cottages letterhead from the First Lady
Eleanor Roosevelt to her son James Roosevelt regarding his ulcer
problem and SIGNED as "Mother." In full: "Jimmy Dear: Mrs. William
Brown Meloney tells me she was cured of an ulcer by finding what
foods she could not eat. The man who cured her was Dr. I. P. Allen,
16 East 90th Street. He is a specialist in diet. Mch Love, Mother."
Jame Roosevelt left his job as an insurance executive in 1937 to
become secretary to his father in the White House. His relationships
with other presidential aides were strained, and he was known as "the
crown prince" and "assistant president." The stress was so great that
James developed ulcers and in 1938 resigned. This letter bears
directly on this situation. About Fine with envelope postmarked
