Please consider:

Boethius [Anicius Manlius Severinus]. Of the Consolation of
Philosophy. In Five Books. Made English and Illustrated with Notes by
the Rt. Hon. Richard Lord Viscount Preston (Richard Graham). London:
Awnsham and John Churchill, 1695. First edition of this translation. 20
cm x 12 cm, xxxii, 246 pp., errata, blank. Engraved portrait of
Boethius. Apparently contemporary calf (worn) with gilt title,
decoration on spine. Text is browned throughout but otherwise very clean
(absent marginalia, etc.). Skillfully replaced end papers. First “made
English” by Alfred the Great, The Consolation of Philosophy was one of
the most influential books of the Middle Ages. Graham, himself a
condemned prisoner in the Tower, must have seen the similarity of their
situations, for Boethius composed this meditation in the condemned cells
at Pavia early in the 6th Century. Viscount Preston was pardoned and
released from prison, where upon he set out to complete this
translation. Anicius Manlius Serverinus did not survive his
imprisonment. 850.00 USD
