Augustine, Saint, Bishop of Hippo. OF THE CITIE OF GOD. London: G.
Eld  and M. Flesher 1620. Second Edition. WITH THE LEARNED COMMENTS OF
IO.  LODOVICUS VIVES. Folio (8" x 12-1/2") bound in nineteenth century
full  calf with five raised bands and gilt rules, lettering stamped in
black  on  the spine, new endpapers; [18], 861 (i.e. 860), [4]  pages:
[3],  A-4D6.  Includes index. The Second Edition in English  with  the
translation of John Healey, nicely printed with woodcut initals, head-
and  tailpieces,  and  borders.  The   first  English  edition  of  DE
CIVITATE  DEI was published 1610, also translated by John Healey,  and
includes  the  editorial  material of the Spanish  scholar  Juan  Luis
Vives  (1492-1540). This 1620 second edition reprints the text of  the
first  edition  with  some  minor  alterations  and  corrections.  The
epistle  dedicatory  has been replaced by that of the editor,  William
Crashawe.  The new epistle is interesting for Crashawe refers directly
to the issue of whether Augustine is suitable reading for Protestants,
or  whether  his  works  fuel the Catholic  cause.  Bookplate  of  the
antiquary  James  Ford  (1779-1850).  Title page with  tear  to  lower
corner,  nealty relaid; following two leaves torn to fore margin  (one
with  slight  loss to border) and tear to lower corner of final  leaf,
all  neatly  repaired;  dampstain  to   lower  portion  of  first  few
gatherings;  occasional marking in ink in an early hand. Spine lightly
rubbed.  Near  Fine.  A  handsome  copy  of  this  religious  classic.
