Augustine, Saint, Bishop of Hippo. OF THE CITIE OF GOD. London: G.
Eld and M. Flesher 1620. Second Edition. WITH THE LEARNED COMMENTS OF
IO. LODOVICUS VIVES. Folio (8" x 12-1/2") bound in nineteenth century

[3], A-4D6. Includes index. The Second Edition in English with the
translation of John Healey, nicely printed with woodcut initals, head-
and tailpieces, and borders. The first English edition of DE
CIVITATE DEI was published 1610, also translated by John Healey, and
includes the editorial material of the Spanish scholar Juan Luis
Vives (1492-1540). This 1620 second edition reprints the text of the
first edition with some minor alterations and corrections. The
epistle dedicatory has been replaced by that of the editor, William
Crashawe. The new epistle is interesting for Crashawe refers directly
to the issue of whether Augustine is suitable reading for Protestants,
or whether his works fuel the Catholic cause. Bookplate of the
antiquary James Ford (1779-1850). Title page with tear to lower
corner, nealty relaid; following two leaves torn to fore margin (one
with slight loss to border) and tear to lower corner of final leaf,
all neatly repaired; dampstain to lower portion of first few
gatherings; occasional marking in ink in an early hand. Spine lightly
rubbed. Near Fine. A handsome copy of this religious classic.
