GLASSE, Mrs. [GLASSE, Hannah]. THE ART OF COOKERY MADE PLAIN AND
EASY; EXCELLING ANY THING OF THE KIND EVER YET PUBLISHED....
Alexandria: Cottom & Stewart 1805. First Edition. ALSO, THE ORDER OF
A BILL OF FARE FOR EACH MONTH, IN THE MANNER THE DISHES ARE TO BE
PLACED UPON THE TABLE, IN THE PRESENT TASTE. The First American
Edition of this cookery classic. Bitting, page 189; Lowenstein 93.
Duodecimo (12mo: 4" x 6-3/4") bound in full original calf with
gilt-lettered morocco spine label; 308, [16] pages. First published
in England in 1747, Glasse's book was reprinted many times and was
the most popular cookbook in early America. George Washington and
Thomas Jefferson owned copies. The text for the American edition was
essentially the same but for some minor changes and additions, such
as the recipe suited for Virginia's climate: "Method of destroying
the putrid Smell which Meat acquires during hot Weather." This copy
completely original with no restoration. An owner's 1896 pencil name
appears on the first blank as well as a small ink stamp of the same
family name at the top margin of the first page of text. An old
newspaper recipe is affixed to the front pastedown. Fairly even
browning to the text; one leaf (pages 99-100) with an old crude
repaired tear with archival tape with no loss. Spine lacks leather at
the top and bottom about an inch and some scattered loss to covers.
Rear joint split but both covers tight. Two vertical splits also
along spine resulting in some looseness of pages but still held
firmly by the cords. All in all, an unsophisticated copy entirely
complete with endpapers and blanks and not too bad for a cookbook
that likely received much use. About Very Good $2500.00
