(MEDICINE) Montana de Monserrate, Bernardino. LIBRO DE LA ANOTHOMIA DEL
HO[M]BRE. Valladolid: Sebastian Martinez. 1551. First edition. Folio (11-1/2” x
8-3/8”) ff.144. Illustrated with 12 large anatomical woodcuts after Vesalius.
Title-page printed in red & black with a large woodcut shield. The second section
has a separate title page within a woodcut border, signed “S.M.” Cont.
vellum, hand lettered spine, upper corner of back cover torn. Housed in a cloth
clamshell box with leather spine label. A few early annotations throughout,
including a small diagram of a jointed limb. Initial and final few leaves with some
light marginal staining and some rubbing to corners of last few leaves. Note:
the original binder has used sheets printed with a full-page devotional
broadsheet woodcut of the Virgin as endleaves. This same image is repeated twice on
the front endleaves and once at the rear. These woodcuts constitute an
unusual addition and are a rare survival in themselves. Overall, a very good
unsophisticated copy. $45,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
This important work by Montana de Monserrate can be credited with introducing
into Spain the Vesalian anatomical system coupled with a text in the
vernacular. Norman Catalogue, p.556; Waller 6647; Durling 3239; Palau 177538.
