Le Bon Genre. Réimpression du recueil de 1827
comprenant les "Observations" et les 115
Gravures. Les Éditions Albert Levy, Paris, 1931.
One of 760 sets issued. Original portfolio with
printed boards, 40 x 30 cm. Contains the 16 pp.
preliminary text with title and limitation and
the essay by Leon Moussinac, the 24 pp. bound
facsimile of the description of the plates, and
the 113 plates themselves (print area c. 18 x
25.5 cm within plate mark). These are superb
re-engraved facsimiles of the famous edition of
1827, printed on laid paper, colored by hand
(through stencils) by Saudé, the pre-eminent
pochoir colorist. The decorative quality is quite
extraordinary. Very occasional and very slight
foxing to the blank margins of the plates, some wear and fading to portfolio.

This is one of the highlights of French 19th
century fashion illustration (and caricature).
The plates are supremely decorative, and more
than a touch ironic. The original edition is
almost unattainable. This superb facsimile has
become rare, largely because the plates are so eminently frameable.
