Whatman, Susanna. SUSANNA WHATMAN. HER HOUSEKEEPING BOOK.
Cambridge University Press: 250 copies printed for the Friends of the
Printer at Christmas, 1952.
Susanna Whatman was the wife of a prosperous paper manufacturer in the late
18th century, and compiled a "housekeeping" book, which listed in detail
the daily and seasonal duties of various servants in her household. The
manuscript book was passed down in the family before being first printed
here, with an introduction by Thomas Balston. An interesting glimpse into
how a well-to-do household was run in Georgian times. Hardcover. 6.5"x9.5",
portrait frontispiece, and line illustrations by Lawrence Josset. Light
cover rubbing, but a nice copy. [08141] $225.00
