(SHAW, George Bernard). THE ADVENTURES OF THE BLACK GIRL IN HER
SEARCH FOR GOD. London: Constable & Company Limited (1932). First
Edition. Laurence A210a. Pictorial boards and twenty woodblock
illustrations within by John Farleigh. This copy with a lengthy
SIGNED INSCRIPTION by the author on the half title page: "Ayot St.
Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts/Easter Sunday 1941./Dear Mrs. Berry/As this
is a first edition it has all the/original mistakes in it. See my
marginal notes/on pages 11, 35 & 63./Sell it to the foolish people
who collect/first editions; and buy a properly corrected copy/with
the proceeds. The transaction will be/quite profitable./Your father

are not sure to whom Shaw refers to though we have ruled out Chuck
Berry. On the three pages mentioned by Shaw are MANUSCRIPT
corrections in his hand ranging from one to two sentences. Neatly
laid down on the page opposite the half title is a Shaw Compliments
card with the following in Shaw's hand dated 18 April 1941 and SIGNED
with his initials: "My secretary will return the picture/My signature
is just above Laura Knight's." Owner name on verso of front endpaper.
