Dresser, Louisa. XVIIth CENTURY PAINTING IN NEW ENGLAND. A CATALOGUE OF AN
EXHIBITION HELD AT THE WORCESTER ART MUSEUM IN COLLABORATION WITH THE
AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY.
Worcester Art Museum: 1934.
Karpel notes- "A new standard of acceptable scholarship in the field of
American art history was established by the author in the quality of
research that preceded the publication of this very significant catalog".
The text includes "an excellent article" on 17th century portraiture in New
England by Dresser as well as descriptions of the 36 portraits. Of
particular interest was the extensive use of x-ray photography to evaluate
each portrait, the first time this technique had been used as an integral
part of preparing an exhibition; Alan Burroughs, head of x-ray research at
the Fogg Museum of Art, includes a report on his findings in this catalog.
Hardcover. 7"x10.5", 187 pages, b/w plates; a very nice copy, with a short
repaired tear along the top joint and a little soil. [07967] $125.00
