Duodecimo, xii, 13-311 pages. Near Fine.
      An important work in which the author attempts to make Americans aware
of "
the necessity of doing something to protect from their cruel oppressors
the unfortunate men who become sailors." Jewell came into contact with many
American sailors when he was U.S. Consul to Singapore. Among the many issues
he discusses here are bad men in command of ships, mutiny and self defense,
increase of wrecks, short rations, low wages, cruel punishments, women as
sailors, and much more. Prior contemporary ownership signature of Capt. J.
W. Reynolds on preliminary blank and on half title. Bound in dark blue cloth
over bevelled boards with gilt-stamped spine and upper board titles,
gilt-stamped illustration on upper board, dark brown endpapers. Mild rubs
along joints and at extremities. Front free endpaper has a diagonal crease
to top fore corner with a cleanly closed tear following it about halfway
across, light age toning to textblock. Hinges are not cracked. Lovely copy.
