The Royal Commission. THE LONDON CITY LIVERY COMPANIES' VINDICATION.
London; Printed by Gilbert and Rivington, Ltd.: 1885.
A defense of the Livery Companies of the City of London, which illustrates
a remarkable and troubling chapter in their history. In the early 1880s
several newspapers and authors undertook a campaign to discredit the
companies with the apparent intent of having them dissolved. A Royal
Commission was appointed to investigate the charges and found very little
to substantiate them. As part of their defense the various Companies
supplied testimony about their history and activities, much of which is
reproduced here, giving an intimate glimpse into their inner workings. The
anonymous author also details, at length, the campaign which was waged
against them, and the hearings themselves.
