CHURCH, James. UNIVERSITY FOOT-BALL. THE PLAY OF EACH POSITION
TREATED BY A COLLEGE EXPERT. New York: Scribner 1893. First Edition.
[12], 133 pp. Green cloth with gilt lettering and a gilt decoration
on the front cover of a football surrounded by small flags.
Illustrated with photographs and diagrams. Different positions are
described by experts accompanied by a photograph of the expert with
chapters as well on formations, training, referees, and rules. From
the quarter-back chapter as described by one Edgar Allan Poe,
apparently a well-known player of the time: "It was not until 1882
that a player was specially assigned to the place." Full of early and
fascinating information. A few signatures are pulled with cracks
within text block, but nothing is detached. University library
bookplate on the front pastedown, blindstamp on the title page, and
white numbers on the spine with two small deaccession ink stamps on
the front and rear endpapers. Very Good and quite uncommon. $200.00
