Perhaps the most unusual art colony in the world was the closely knit
community of Taos, New Mexico, founded during WWI by Bert Phillips and Ernest
Blumenschein journeying in a covered wagon. From Taos has come some of the most
interesting and important art in America. Mabel Dodge Luhan introduces 49
Taos artists in a short, vivid text together with full-page illustrations,
describes the infuence of the desert and Pueblo Indian life upon the painters, and
reminisces about the great artists who have participated in the Taos
spirit--Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Maurice Stern, and "the
Seven". Distinguished photographers Stieglitz, Laura Gilpin, and John Candelario
add portraits of the artists to this collection, and a final section of
Honors gives their biographies, awards, exhibitions, collections and achievements.
