CONQUER': COMBINED OPERATIONS 1940-1942 (SIGNED BY LOUIS MOUNTBATTEN).
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, (1943). First printing, Wrappers, 
Octavo, 144 pages, B&w photographs, maps. Fair.
      Contemporary account of actions of British Commandos in World War II, 
intended to boost the morale of the fighting soldiers, particularly after 
the disastrous defeat in the raid on Dieppe. The significance of this copy 
is that it is SIGNED by Louis Mountbatten, who was then the Director of 
Combined Operations. Mountbatten went on to become the Supreme Allied 
Commander for Southeast Asia where he handled rather well the tough 
assignment of directing Allied operations in Burma and the Indian Ocean. 
After the war he served as the last British viceroy of India. He was created 
a viscount in 1946, made an earl in 1947, and became governor and lord 
lieutenant of the Isle of Wight. Mountbatten was assassinated in 1979 by an 
explosion from a bomb placed aboard his yacht in by the Irish Republican 
Army. Though the signature is not dated, it appears to have been signed at 
or very nearly after the publication date of the book, as it is signed 
simply "Louis Mountbatten." Most later signatures, after he became earl, 
appear as "Mountbatten of Burma." The book itself has quite a bit of wear to 
the covers, particularly along the spine, which shows a lot of chipping. 
There is a .75" square chip to front cover at top edge near spine, mild 
cover creases, and splitting along joints. Interior is in very good to near 
fine condition, with just a few corner creases. Other than the covers, the 
binding is sound. A prior ownership name is penned on the half title above 
Mountbatten's signature.    $150.00
