[ROOSEVELT, Eleanor] CAESAR, Irving. SING A SONG OF SAFETY. New
York: Irving Caesar (1937). First Edition. Pictorial stiff wraps with
a spiral binding (9" x 12"). Music by Gerald Marks and illustrations
by Rose O'Neill. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S COPY with both Roosevelt's
bookplate (nearly detached) and the small circular estate label, this
numbered 145, on the front pastedown. SIGNED by Marks on the
half-title page and INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Caesar "To/Eleanor
Roosevelt/with warm appreciation/from/Irving Caesar." A member of the
Songwriters Hall of Fame, Caesar died in 1996 at the age of 101. One
of his earliest hits, written with George Gershwin, was "Swanee,"
Gershwin's first and biggest pop hit thanks to the singer Al Jolson's
interpretation. Caesar wrote many other hits including "Tea For Two"
and "Crazy Rhythm." This book, SING A SONG OF SAFETY, the first in a
series of similar titles, was used by schools throughout the country
to teach children the basic principles of safety at home and in the
streets. It consists of a series of 19 songs designed to promote
world unity and peace and was inspired by the creation of The United
Nations, an organization close to Eleanor Roosevelt's heart. Rose
O'Neill, the illustrator, invented the Kewpie Doll, easily seen in
the faces in this book. Near Fine $1000.00
