Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 8728 ) Sherburne, John Henry (1794-1850?). THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF
JOHN PAUL JONES, A CAPTAIN IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY DURING THE
REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
New York: Adriance, Sherman & Co., Publishers, 1851. Second Edition,
Original cloth, Octavo, xvi, [9]-408 pages, engraved frontispiece portrait,
fold-out facsimile. Very good.
Second edition of one of the earliest biographies of John Paul Jones,
originally published in 1825, and the source of perhaps the most famous
quote attributed to Jones. The scene was the battle between the Bon homme
Richard and the H.M.S. Serapis when Jones's ship appeared beaten. According
to Jones's first lieutenant, Richard Dale, the captain of the Serapis hailed
over, "Has your ship struck?" Jones immediately replied, "I have not yet
begun to fight" (page 121 herein). Sherburne had become good friends with
Richard Dale, which illustrates the value of this biography in that the
author was able to correspond with many individuals then still living who
had known or served with Jones, including former Presidents Jefferson and
Madison. Sherburne was also apparently the first to organize an attempt to
return the remains of John Paul Jones to the United States. Bound in
original brown cloth over boards with blind-stamped boards and gilt-stamped
spine, pale yellow endpapers. Tissue-guarded frontispiece engraving by J. C.
Buttre after a portrait by Charles Wilson Peale. Fold-out facsimile of
Captain Jones's congressional commission. Head and heel of spine have
chipping, three fore corner tips are slightly rubbed and frayed. Remnants of
a paper library label on spine and a number stamped on title page are the
only indications of ex-library status. Prior owner bookplate on front
pastedown, name dated 1865 on front free endpaper. Hinges are not cracked.
Clean and sound copy. $125.00
