From one of the finest collections of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt material
offered in many years, part of our catalogue of SIGNED PRESIDENTIAL material
posted on our website: http://www.erols.com/agvent. Also included are important
signed and association copies of LBJ, Harry Truman and Theodore Roosevelt.
ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to her son James
on White House stationery. Washington: August 4. A two-page AUTOGRAPH
LETTER on both sides of official stationery headed "THE WHITE HOUSE"
with "Washington" beneath that, completely in Eleanor Roosevelt's
hand, to her son James Roosevelt SIGNED as "Mother." Roosevelt sends
her son $200 (not included, obviously) as payment toward a larger
loan and discusses her son's business dealings: "Jud Adams came in to
see me the other day & asked me to tell you that he thought you could
make a success & do well in the new company if the old President &
all his entourage was out. He said no reputable business people would
trust anyone or any firm which still was in any way under his
influence or control. He did not seem to feel this way about Hale but
wanted to know if your lawyer was still the same as before you came
in. I pass this on for what it may be worth to you. Fred thinks you
are fine & he backs Father so I think he is trying to be helpful. How
are you & Bets & Sara & JJr? Much, much love, Mother." Attending but
not graduating from Harvard, James became an insurance executive, a
position he left in 1937 to become secretary to his father in the
White House. Most letters by Eleanor Roosevelt that appear on the
market are typed. Here is a fine completely handwritten example, on
White House stationery, and to her son. Normal creases, occasional
fading of ink. About Fine $2000.00
