      The first biography of General Sherman. The authors tapped many 
official sources close to Sherman as well as Sherman's own order and letter 
books to gather their facts in this vindication of his actions and his truce 
with General J. E. Johnston. Appendix contains General Sherman's testimony 
relative to the truce before the Committee on the Conduct of the War. 
NEVINS, et al., Vol. II p. 40; DORNBUSCH Vol. II, #2433. Bound in leather 
spine and fore corners with marbled paper sides, marbled endpapers and 
textblock edges. Lettered in gilt on black title blocks on spine. 
Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Sherman with facsimile signature 
plus those of 7 other generals throughout text, 5 maps. Slight offsetting 
from portraits. Minor extremity rubs, prior owner bookplate on front 
pastedown, owner name and address penned on verso of front free endpaper. 
Hinges not cracked. Lovely copy.    $200.00
