Thomas Malton was an architectual draughtsman of some repute; known
for his accuracy in perspective, young J. M. W. Turner was brought to
Malton by his father for lessons on that very subject, and
subsequently Turner, in later life, said "My real master was Tom
Malton." [DNB].

The last 8 pp of Volume I describe the case of the author, who lost
the [bulk of the] first edition sheets [1776] to fire; and accounts
for the relative scarcity of that edition.
