MILLER, Arthur. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) on THE CRUCIBLE. 20
April 1973. Uncommon and rather important letter completely in
Miller's hand and SIGNED by him on his personal stationery with the
original envelope addressed in his hand. In full: "It is 20 years ago
that I wrote The Crucible and it is hard to remember why Rebecca
Nurse appealed to me as the right person to carry this role, but I
believe it was because of her wide reputation for goodness, plus the
fact that her husband had had arguments with Thomas Putnam over some
land, which I think is what caused Putnam to lead the cry against
Rebecca. The Easty case was not, in short, dramatically as useful but
I of course knew and was much moved by her character and her terrible
death. Thank you for writing, Sincerely yours, Arthur Miller." Mary
Easty and Rebecca Nurse were sisters accused of witchcraft and hanged
in Massachusetts in 1692. A brief but insightful letter by one of
America's greatest playwrights on one of his greatest plays. Typical
folds from mailing. Near Fine with original envelope. $750.00
