Hart, Joseph. THE ROMANCE OF YACHTING: VOYAGE THE FIRST.

New York; Harper & Brothers: 1848.

An early and very scarce American yachting memoir by the author of ‘Miriam
Coffin; or, The Whale Fisherman’, the first novel to deal with whaling.
This title includes details of a voyage to Spain, on navigation, and a
nautical glossary. Somewhat improbably it also includes a chapter on the
Bacon-Shakespeare controversy, and is considered important in that canon
of literature.

Hardcover. 5.5”x7.5”, 332 pages, plus advertisements; publisher’s
blindstamped black cloth with gilt title and yacht vignette; covers a bit
rubbed and dusty, slight pull at spine head; endpapers discolored; 1908
postcard discussing the book tacked to the endpaper; old, brittle
newspaper clipping tacked to the rear endpaper; A little light internal
soil, but quite a nice copy. Inkstamp of James McQuade on the title page
and his signature on the contents page; McQuade, a member of the New York
Yacht Club, was author of “The Cruise of the Montauk to Bermuda, the West
Indies and Florida.” [09918] $650.00
